Solar Energy at the Claremont Colleges: Prospects and Opportunities
Faculty:
Dr. Richard C. Haskell
Burton G. Bettingen Professor of Physics
Harvey Mudd College
Richard (Dick) Haskell’s research interests have been in biophysics and biomedical optics, though he finds himself being drawn into the challenge of finding renewable energy sources that will support a sustainable Earth. Contact: richard_haskell@hmc.edu
- Dr. B. Samuel Tanenbaum
Visiting Professor of Physics
Joint Science Department of the Claremont College
Sam Tanenbaum is an Visiting Professor of Physics at the Joint Science Department and Professor Emeritus of Engineering at Harvey Mudd College, where he was Dean of Faculty from 1975 to 1993. He has had an interest in energy issues since the first US energy crisis in 1973. For the past three years he has been teaching a course each semester on Energy and the Environment. Students:
- Matthew Streshinsky
Harvey Mudd College ’11
Matt Streshinsky is attending Harvey Mudd College, where is be a sophomore with an interest in physics and engineering. Outside of school, he enjoys pole vaulting on the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps track team, playing the guitar (as well as the violin on occasion), and wandering around in a hungry stupor looking for food. One of his career highlights is working with Chris Wohlers on this study of solar technology. He hopes to continue to be involved in the Harvey Mudd community advocating solar power. Christopher Wohlers
Pitzer College ’09, Physics and Environmental Studies
Chris Wohlers’sinterests lie in innovative photovoltaic technologies, while his non-scientific interests lie in biking, dumpster diving, and political activism. The highlight of his career has been collaborating with Matthew Streshinsky on this study of solar technology. Contact: christopher_wohlers@pitzer.edu
